New Dog in Town

We were bummed when the owners of Zona 78 on River Road closed their doors a while back. The Happy Hour there was one of the best in town, as was the Chef’s Board. Their pizzas were another big draw.

But thankfully, for Tucsonans, the team reopened under a new name and new concept.

The new concept is a little more pub than the previous enoteca style: sandwiches over pastas; beer over wine. The beer selection is great with plenty of local brews.

The menu states, “every bite, if you ate it we made it…’

The new name, Stray Dogs, is a bit odd but with several big hot dogs on the menu and a dog friendly pario, there seems to be a method to the madness. There are still some pies, but I didn’t see that Chef’s Board. They also have a brunch menu on weekends.

When we stopped by yesterday there was a good crowd in both the bar and the dining room. The bar has been redone with lighter tones, a longer bar and a brighter feel due to how they opened up the front area.

Two people ordered hot dogs. One a Chicago dog, the other a chili dog. Both pronounced then quite good. I ordered the grilled cheese, which was okay. Next time I’d add one or two ot the other cheeses available.

We split the onion rings which were perfect. They came with a mild ranch style dressing and a kicked-up thousand island.

Zona78 fans can still dine at the restaurant located on Tanque Verde Road.

Sadly, the only photo I took was of the onion rings.

We will return to Stray Dogs no doubt pretty soon.
