Good Things Really Can Come in Small Spaces

The sandwich is the picture above is called the Blue Ox and comes from The Sausage Shop Meat Market & Deli. The Blue Ox is only one of a long list of sandwiches that can be found at this tiny butcher shop on Ft. Lowell Road (between Oracle Road and Flowing Wells).
For those who may not be familiar, you should be. There you’ll find not just all those sandwiches but sausages of every ilk; thick steaks in every cut imaginable; fat pork chops, both stuffed and unstuffed; plump chickens; roasts; burgers, cold cuts, cheeses and more. And the bacon, don’t get me started on the bacon. If you don’t see what you like just ask Kent or Mike – the owners and guys behind the counter – and they’ll find it for you.DSCN0820
The aroma hits you even before you open the door. Even New York chefs have been impressed by the wide array of choices.
We treat ourselves to a visit to the shop about once a month to stock up. We’ll buy a packet of forty frozen burger patties and a couple pounds of pepper bacon one visit or a couple of packages of New York Strip Steaks and stuffed pork chops the next. Like any good butcher, the meats can be cut to your preference.DSCN1413
As far as those sandwiches go, the only advice I can give is get there early at lunchtime or else you’ll have a wait. The line is often out the door. You can also find an assortment of homemade salads or gourmet condiments to round out a meal.
Shopping here proves that just because you shop locally that doesn’t mean you sacrifice quality. The Sausage Shop is a true local treasure.
