There are few foods on this earth better than a good grilled cheese sandwich. Crunchy, gooey, buttery goodness all in one bite; what could be better? Even those white bread, American grilled cheese sandwiches turned to a golden brown on a flattop bring sighs of satisfaction.
Grilled cheese is comfort food at its finest. A friend once noted that whenever she was feeling low or a little under the weather the only meal that would make her feel better was a bowl of Campbell’s Tomato Soup and a slightly greasy grilled cheese on white bread.
These days grilled cheese sandwiches can be found on four-star menus and neighborhood diners.
Everyone has their own spin on what makes a good grilled cheese. Some feel it isn’t complete unless there’s a dill pickle slice tucked in between the bread and cheese. Others prefer a tomato slice. Some slather mayo in the inside to more creaminess. And a sprinkle of Parmesan to the outside adds a crunchy sharpness to each bite.
April is National Grilled Cheese month.and with that in mind the folks at Sauce Pizza and Wine restaurants are sponsoring a competition to find the “Outstanding and Fantastic Grilled Cheese Sandwich.” Now through April 18th you can submit your own creative spin on this iconic sandwich.
All elements should be considered: the bread, the cheese (or cheeses), the spread or any additions. Do you fry it up in butter? Or is a special oil your preference? Does it have to have bacon? A green chile or two? Is a croissant to your liking? Or maybe a crusty Italian loaf? Cheddar? Mozzarella? Both?
The best part about the whole contest is that the winning sandwich will be featured on the Sauce menu in May and for every sandwich sold Sauce will donate $1.00 to the winner’s charity of choice.
